Yuk Sung (Fake Away)

Details:     Prep Time = 10 minutes.      Cooking Time =4-6 hrs     Serves= 6-8 8 as a starter 4 as a main.

As your probably aware my little boy has  allergy’s, so ordering from a takeaway for the family is a No Go. I really wanted to share some of my favorite foods with him as I love a yuk Sung. I was very excited to share this with him, I showed him what to do stuff the lettuce with the pork mix. Me excited showed him how to hold it gave it him, He screamed and refused to even try it? Gutted.

He went on to be poorly for a week so It wasn’t personal he was just ill and didn’t want or need food. Its always a first sign.

Had to laugh will make it for him when hes well one day.

My daughter and Neil loved it. few.

Ingredients

NB when preparing ingredients those in the same colour can be mixed in the same bowl as they are used in the cooking process at the same time. Those in black are to remain separate.

  • 1 tbls of Oil to cook, May need more less use as little as you can.yuk sung
  • 850g Pork Mince.
  • 6 spring onions chopped finely.
  • 2 Garlic cloves smashed and chopped roughly.
  • 1″ ginger grated. or chopped finely.
  • 2 Celery sticks chopped finely.
  • 2 Carrots diced finely.
  • 3 tbsp Dark Soy sauce.
  • 3 tbsp Oyster Sauce.yuk sung 1
  • 2 tsp sugar.
  • 2 tbsp white wine vinegar (or rice wine)
  • 225g tin of water chestnuts.  chopp finely.
  • lettuce cups to stuff and wrap. NB:the first time I made this I used Ice burg lettuce but couldn’t get good cups I recommend Gem lettuce.  so easy.
  • Spring onion shredded to garnish.

Method

Always lightly oil the Hot Pot before use this helps with cleaning and preservation of the Hot Pot.

  1. Heat the oil in a large heavy sided frying pan medium high heat, Add the pork mince fry until browned.  Put in the slow cooker and turn on low.
  2. Now fry the spring onion, garlic and ginger. Until aromatic about 5 minutes don’t let anything burn, stir in with the pork.
  3. Add the celery and carrot to the slow cooker/Hot pot. stir well
  4. In a Jug mix the soy sauce, oyster sauce, sugar, white wine vinegar together to make a sauce. Pour all over the pork in the pot.
  5. Leave on low for 4-6 hrs
  6. 10 minutes before serving, add the water chestnuts. stir.

I serve this wrapped in a lettuce leaf and sprinkle some extra spring onion on top, you can add crispy noodles too but I couldn’t find any without egg so I avoided this.
